A Picasso Uncovered

A new painting by one of the most famous artists of all time, Pablo Picasso, was recently discovered ─ underneath another one of his paintings.

Experts had long suspected that there was something painted beneath Picasso’s The Blue Room painting. The Blue Room has unusual brushstrokes that do not quite match each other. This led them to believe Picasso painted something on the canvas and then later painted The Blue Room on top of the original image.

For five years, experts worked using high-tech equipment and infrared cameras to confirm that beneath The Blue Room there was indeed a painting ─ a portrait of a man with a beard and a bowtie, sitting in a chair.

No one is sure yet who this man was, or if there are more undiscovered paintings. It is known, however, that Picasso often painted over paintings to save money on buying canvases.

Picasso is from Spain and lived during the early 20th Century. One of his most famous styles is called “cubism,” which features neutral colors and geometric shapes. It is estimated that he created more than 50,000 pieces in his lifetime. His paintings, sculptures, drawings, tapestries and more are admired by millions of people around the world.
